Google Brings Smart Writing Assistant to Chrome Browser

Google has been steadily incorporating AI tools into its many apps and services over the past few months. With the recent release of Chrome for Windows, Macs, and Linux, AI-powered “Help Me Write” will be available. This new feature helps users write text for the web with just a few clicks.

The “Help Me Write” tool uses artificial intelligence to compose draft text for things like reviews, posts, and more. It works similarly to the AI assistants in Gmail, Google Docs, Keep, and other Google products. Users can enter a short prompt or some notes about what they want to write. The AI will then generate a draft that captures the main points.

People also have some options to refine the generated text. For example, users can ask the AI to make the writing more brief or more detailed. The tone can be adjusted to something more casual or formal as well. All of this means Chrome users can get writing assistance without doing all the work themselves.

What makes the Chrome version unique is how it uses context from the web page. In addition to the user’s prompt, the AI examines the open website to better understand the topic. This allows it to provide drafts that more directly fit what someone wants to write about that specific page or site.

For now, “Help me write” in Chrome is hidden and needs special flags to be accessed. It may not be ready for all until the next Chrome update in early 2023. While Chromebooks won’t support it immediately, this browser feature brings AI writing help to more desktop users across Windows, Mac, and Linux. With just a few suggested words, the assistant does the hard work, so anyone can contribute positive online content.
