Chrome’s New Tab Page Gets a Colorful Makeover

Chrome's New Tab Page Gets a Colorful Makeover

Chrome for Android used to highlight colors with its Dynamic Color feature on the main home screen. Now, it’s giving its New Tab Page (NTP) a fresh coat of paint too!

The NTP is where you see your favorite websites after opening a new tab. Chrome made some style changes to make it even more cheerful. It increased the size of the search bar at the top, similar to changes made in Gmail, Google Chat and Google Search. The text in the search bar is now bolder so it stands out more. The microphone and magnifying glass icons next to the search bar also look clearer.

Below the search bar is a section for your most visited sites. Chrome grouped these into a rounded box instead of listing them separately, to help separate it from the rest of the page. The buttons to switch between your recent sites and discovery articles got a facelift too.

These changes don’t fundamentally alter how the NTP works, but make it feel fresher with the bigger, bolder elements. Even though more space is used, you can still see the same amount of content.

The updated NTP design is rolling out slowly with the latest Chrome 119 update. It follows similar visual tweaks made to the desktop Chrome browser last week. The new colorful look brings the NTP in line with Google’s Material You design philosophy of adjusting colors and layouts based on your wallpaper. Now when you open a new tab on your Android, you’ll be greeted by a greeting card-style page that’s as cheerful as your home screen!
