Google Adding Email Summaries to Gmail App

Generative AI offers users the ability to summarize articles, documents, and even audio recordings and phone calls using summarization functionality. Google is apparently preparing to add email summarization to the Gmail app.

Reports indicate that Google is working on a new “summarize this email” button for the Gmail app on Android. Code detectives found hints of this feature in a recent version of the app. It will display a button below the subject line to get a summary of the email.

Google already lets business users get email thread summaries through its Gemini app. However, this feature is limited to longer email chains on desktop computers. The new button in Gmail will let anyone get single email summaries from their phone.

Being Able To Summarize Lengthy Emails On The Go

This could be very handy for summarizing lengthy or complex emails when you’re away from WiFi. Especially since phones are what many people use to check email on the go. For now, the button is in development and not usable. But it seems Google aims to add this helpful AI feature soon.

Only time will tell if summaries will work offline too. Having capabilities without an internet connection would be most useful and private. But for now, Google is taking steps to utilize AI summarization within the Gmail experience on Android.
