Samsung Joins The Race For Satellite Phones With Galaxy S24

With the iPhone 14 lineup, Apple introduced Emergency SOS via satellite, allowing users to contact emergency services where there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. A similar feature has been pushed by other smartphone manufacturers by Google, and Samsung just announced it will add satellite-based capabilities to the Galaxy S24.

Samsung is following in Apple’s footsteps and plans to add satellite connectivity to its upcoming Galaxy S24 smartphones. The popular Android maker confirmed that the new feature will allow S24 users to call for help even without cell service. Samsung executive Park Yong said the phones will offer emergency communication using satellites starting in early 2024.

It’s rumored the satellite features will first debut on the high-end Galaxy S24 Ultra model. But Samsung may include it on the entire S24 series like Apple does. The space technology would work similarly to the iPhone’s Emergency SOS feature. It guides users through questions and then uses their location to contact responders. Samsung is also exploring sending text messages via satellite, not just emergency calls.

Since Apple added satellite SOS to the iPhone 14, it has already helped rescue stranded hikers, campers, and others in remote areas. Countries where the service operates have praised it. While the feature was free temporarily, Apple said it would charge for ongoing access after two years.

By launching satellite capability on the Galaxy S24, Samsung aims to one-up Apple in the marketplace. It could attract buyers concerned with off-grid safety and give Samsung devices an edge in remote work and travel situations. Stay tuned for more Galaxy S24 news as its early 2024 launch approaches.
