Google Messages May Soon Let You Text Via Satellite

It appears that Google Messages is getting satellite-based texting features. Apparently, Google and Garmin are collaborating on bringing emergency SOS via satellite to Android phones, based on some strings of code found in the app.

Coder Neïl Rahmouni uncovered UI hints and translated strings referring to satellite messaging in Google Messages. The fitness company Garmin, known for its satellite devices, is also mentioned.

Garmin provides emergency response services from satellites to over 150 countries worldwide. Partnering here could give Google Messages a big advantage, unlike Apple’s satellite option currently limited to a few places.

However, nothing is confirmed yet. Satellite texting on Android is coming, but launch details remain unclear. Not all phones will support it either.

Still, teaming with Garmin could quickly facilitate global satellite SOS messaging via Google Messages. Now Android users just eagerly await more launch info on this life-saving functionality.
