Making AI Safe in Android Apps

Making AI Safe in Android Apps

In all of our favorite Android apps, generative AI is making its way into the mix. Starting next year, Google will require developers to better moderate generative AI in Android apps. This will help protect users from offensive or inappropriate content.

Google wants to keep users safe from harmful AI. Some apps now use AI to create pictures, words or videos. But this AI could sometimes make offensive things by accident. Starting in 2023, Google said app makers must allow users to report any bad AI content without leaving the app.

App creators will also need to follow Google’s rules on banned content. Some examples are images or words that hurt children or try to trick people. Apps that use AI to summarize information or help with tasks don’t need to change. And apps that only show AI-made content also don’t need to change.

Google is also limiting how much data apps can see on your phone. Only apps that really need photos or videos will get full access. Other apps will need to ask your permission each time they need pictures or clips. This helps keep your information more private.

In short, with these simple changes, Google wants to keep AI content safe for users while still allowing helpful AI to exist in apps. Developers just need to give users a way to flag issues and avoid banned topics to stay on the Google Play Store.
