In the past, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, had discussed building a “new AI hardware device” with former Apple designer Jony Ive. The firm of Jony Ive has now hired Apple’s iPhone and Watch Product Design Chief to work on a “new artificial intelligence hardware project,” aiming to make “devices with the latest capabilities.”
Jony Ive used to design products for Apple like the iMac, iPhone, and iPad. He now runs his own company called LoveFrom. Sam Altman is the head of a company called OpenAI that makes AI software. They have been talking about making a new device together that uses AI.
LoveFrom has hired Tang Tan to help with this project. Tang Tan was in charge of designing iPhones and Apple Watches at Apple. He will leave Apple in early 2024. At LoveFrom, he will help Jony Ive design their new AI devices and think about what features they should have.
LoveFrom wants the AI software to come from OpenAI where Sam Altman works. Together they want to create useful devices for homes that are smart using artificial intelligence. Right now they are focusing on hiring people and coming up with ideas.
While they didn’t say exactly, it’s possible their first device could be a new type of smartphone that really uses AI. Jony Ive knows how to make great phones from his time at Apple.
