Is Samsung Finally Going to Get On Board with Seamless Updates?

Samsung has stubbornly avoided seamless updates, even though Android introduced the feature years ago. Though Samsung has so far avoided adopting this method of updating, it may become increasingly difficult for them to continue to do so.

Google is thinking of making a change to Android that could force Samsung and other smartphone makers to switch from the current update method to seamless updates. At the moment, Samsung uses the older way of updating where you have to wait for your phone to restart before you can use it again. But seamless updates let you keep using your phone while the new software downloads in the background.

With seamless updates, your phone has two separate sections that each hold a copy of the operating system. While you use one section, the other downloads the update file. Then when it’s time to restart, your phone just switches over to the updated section. This means no waiting around for your device to reboot.

But so far Samsung has refused to adopt this seamless update method. They’ve stuck with the old restart-needed way of updating. Now it seems Google may remove support for the older update process from future versions of Android. If they do that, Samsung would no longer be able to use their current update method at all.

There is a potential workaround though. Samsung could create its own way to update without seamless updates. Or they may just reverse the changes Google makes. Some pros of the restart method are using less storage space and updates potentially installing a bit quicker. But the downside is having to wait while your phone reboots each time.

Do you think the threat of being unable to use the restart method will finally get Samsung to switch over? Or will they find a way around it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
