Google Play Store introduces app discovery videos

Finding new apps to check out on the Google Play Store can be tough. To help, the store already features sections like “Our Monthly Picks” and “New on Play” with editor recommendations. Now Google is expanding this advice with short video reviews.

Google announced a new video series called “The Play Report”. These videos will spotlight popular apps and hidden gems. The hosts will briefly explain what each app is about and give their thoughts on it.

The videos will appear like YouTube Shorts – in a horizontal row of clips at the top of the Play Store homepage for some US users. Others can still watch on YouTube, Facebook or Instagram.

Episodes of “The Play Report” will be released regularly over the coming weeks. Google says expert voices from creators and staff will be featured to discuss their favorite apps.

This aims to guide users towards apps similar to the ones highlighted in each video. It makes finding new downloads on Google Play easier by presenting editorial app picks and reviews in a visual format.

The video pilot just started, so only a teaser is available for now. But it won’t be long before full app discovery episodes roll out to more Play Store users via this new video content on the platform.
