Google Messages Gets Fresh New Contacts Page

With the rollout of Google Messages’ new in-app contacts page, we’ve previously spotted a touch of Material You. Prior to this update, tapping a photo and name at the top of a conversation would open a full Google Contacts entry. It now opens a page that is generated by Google Messages in the app.

The new contacts page centers the person’s profile picture, name, and phone number at the top. Below are some handy circular buttons. You can use these to call or video chat with the contact using Google Meet. There is also a button to open their full contact details on Google Contacts. Lastly, you can search for something related to that person.

In the “Images” section, you see the person’s recent photos in a cool carousel display. As you swipe through the photos, their shapes and sizes smoothly change. You can also check “Videos, links, & more” they’ve shared as well as any “Starred” messages.

Next is a quick section for notifications from that person. You’ll also find a toggle to only send regular SMS/MMS texts. For group conversations, the “people” list helps you see who all is involved.

This new contacts card is still rolling out slowly. But beta users have reported seeing it. Another nice feature called “Profiles” has yet to see widespread release as well.

Overall, the new in-app contacts page makes it easier to access key info about a person from within a conversation. The fun Material You animations add nice visual touches too. Let me know if any part needs more explanation!
