Google Maps is Testing 3D Buildings While Navigating

Google Maps has always let you see buildings in 3D if you turn on that layer. But normally the 3D buildings wouldn’t show up while getting directions. Now Google is testing to change that.

Some people have noticed the 3D buildings appearing during navigation on their Android or iOS phone Google Maps app. But it’s not for everyone yet. The 3D view needs to be on before starting directions. And you need to be zoomed in close to see the buildings.

Even fewer people have spotted 3D buildings showing up during navigation when using Google Maps on Android Auto in their car. A few users documented seeing the transparent 3D buildings along their driving route on Reddit. Testing seems to have begun in mid-December for a handful of Maps users.

Are you one of the lucky ones able to see 3D structures while navigating? Let us know in the comments if you’ve noticed this change and what device you’re using. Seeing your surroundings in 3D could help orient you better when following turn-by-turn guidance. Google appears to be gradually rolling this feature out more widely. Stay tuned for further updates!
