Report: Microsoft is Working on a New Video Copyright App

Microsoft appears to be working on a new video tool similar to YouTube. Recently, the tech giant filed a patent for a product that users can use, like Shazam, to identify videos with copyrighted material. This new app would help creators find unauthorized uses of their videos online.

How Does Microsoft’s Video App Work?

The app would let users check if a video they uploaded has copyrighted content from another creator. To use it, you would submit the video you made (“target video”) and compare it to another video online (“reference video”). Then, the app checks if:

  • Your video uses all the same video clips as the other one.
  • It includes groups of clips also in the other video.
  • The clips are in the same order as the other video.

You wouldn’t always need both videos. If you only had your own video, the app could check it against videos in its database. The database would include videos from Google, Bing and other search engines.

What Could Microsoft Do With This App?

It’s not clear yet what Microsoft will do with this tool. It may become its own separate app or be added to other Microsoft programs. One idea is that it could be part of Microsoft Copilot someday. But patents don’t always become real products, so we’ll have to wait and see!

The app aims to help creators and broadcasters find unauthorized uses of their videos like YouTube’s Copyright Match Tool does. Keep an eye out for if Microsoft decides to release this new video copyright identification app!
