Try Gmail’s Sneak Peek of Android 14’s Coolest New Gesture

The new predictive back gesture was supposed to be one of Android 14’s highlights, but Google hasn’t enabled it systemwide yet. If you want to preview the feature to see how it is better than the default Android back gesture, you can now try out the app version of the gesture on the Gmail app on your Android 14 smartphone.

Gmail Lets You Try the Smooth Predictive Back Swipe

The latest Gmail update includes a way to test out Android 14’s predictive back gesture. When you swipe back on an open email, it shrinks into a small window as part of the animation. This previews where you’ll end up better than the regular back button.

See Email Transitions in Real Time

The predictive back gesture in Gmail provides a visual trail of exiting an email and returning to your inbox. You’ll see your movement in real time rather than just going back instantly. It helps avoid leaving apps accidentally.

Only Works on Android 14 Phones for Now

Unfortunately you need one of the new Pixel or Galaxy phones to try this feature. But Gmail is letting some users experience the improved back gesture before it’s fully ready systemwide.
