TikTok Lite in Trouble with EU Regulators

To foster growth in Europe, TikTok planned to release an iOS and Android app called TikTok Lite that would reward users for engaging with content. This month, the app was launched in France and Spain. However, the European Commission may soon shut it down.

TikTok Lite works like the regular app but pays users for actions like liking videos and following creators. Users earn points redeemable for gifts.

However, regulators say TikTok didn’t properly address concerns about the app’s impact on mental health. The EU’s Digital Services Act requires platforms to assess harmful or illegal content risks.

Thierry Breton, an executive at the European Commission, warns TikTok faces heavy fines or a suspension. He’s worried the rewards could become addictive. TikTok has 24 hours to submit analysis before fines begin.

Failing to comply with the DSA risks fines up to 6% of annual profits. TikTok could also see 1% fines for not answering the Commission’s questions.

If TikTok can’t convince regulators of Lite’s safety, users may lose out on the fun of earning points. Stay tuned – TikTok’s rewards are on the line!
