Microsoft Giving Surface PCs Six Years Of Firmware Support

Microsoft is now providing longer support for some of its Surface computers. According to a support page, Surface PCs made on or after January 1, 2021, will get at least six years of updates. This is better than before when Microsoft only promised four years of updates.

The updates Microsoft will provide are driver and firmware updates. Drivers help your computer’s parts, like the screen, mouse, or speakers, work properly. Firmware updates help parts like the keyboard or touchscreen work right. Getting these updates for longer means your Surface should work well for many more years.

Some Surface models that will now get at least 6 years of updates include the Surface Pro 7 Plus, Surface Laptop 4, Surface Pro 8, and Surface Studio 2 Plus. You can check Microsoft’s support page to see how long specific Surface models will get updates.

This change means people can use their Surface PCs for longer before needing to buy a new one. Other companies, like Google, promise even more updates. Google will give Chromebook laptops made in 2021 or later 10 years of automatic updates.

While 6 years of updates isn’t as good as Google’s 10 years, it is better than only 4 years like Microsoft used to provide. Giving computers longer support is good because it helps reduce waste from people throwing away devices that still work well. It also saves money because you don’t need to buy a new computer as often. More updates should mean happier customers who can rely on their Surface PCs for years.

In general, this move by Microsoft to extend updates makes Surfaces a better value. With guaranteed support lasting 6 years instead of just 4, these Windows machines will stay useful to their owners longer.
