Jack Dorsey Leaves Bluesky Board

It seems the most prominent backer of Bluesky is no longer on the board. Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of Twitter and longtime supporter of Bluesky, announced he has stepped down from his role on the board.

In a brief response on X, Dorsey confirmed he is “no” longer on the Bluesky board when asked by a user. He did not provide any other details about his decision. The timing of Dorsey’s departure is unclear, as Bluesky’s website still listed him as a board member as of last weekend.

Dorsey first highlighted Bluesky in 2019 while still leading Twitter. He hoped Bluesky could create an open and decentralized system for social media. Since then, Bluesky has grown into its own organization, led by CEO Jay Graber. It officially launched its platform for public use earlier this year.

Though Dorsey deleted his Bluesky account in 2021, he was the company’s highest-profile backer. His involvement helped attract funding from venture capitalists. But now it seems Dorsey has stepped back from his direct involvement in guiding Bluesky’s work.

What’s next for Bluesky without its original champion? Will the startup be able to succeed and gain users without Dorsey’s support? Only time will tell if Bluesky can still fulfill its mission of creating a new approach to social networking.
