For Pixel phones, Google has released Magnifier, an app that makes small, dimly lit, or distant text easier to read. In Google’s Pixel event earlier this week, the new accessibility app was introduced to its Pixel 8 series. According to the Magnifier app Play Store listing, users can “magnify small text, see object details, or zoom in on faraway text, such as street signs or restaurant menus behind a service counter.”
The Magnifier app makes it simple to zoom in on text. You use the large plus and minus buttons to make the text bigger or smaller. The round button in the middle freezes the screen so you can look closer. There are also buttons to turn on the phone’s flashlight or switch between the front and back cameras.
You can change settings like making the text darker or lighter. There are also color filters that can help make text easier to read. The app automatically makes pictures better in low light. You can adjust how bright the flashlight is too.
After taking a picture, you get more options. You can copy the text, listen to it being read aloud, or use Google Lens to learn more. The pictures don’t save to your regular photos unless you move them yourself.
Right now, only Pixel 5 phones and newer can use Magnifier. It’s not on the Pixel Fold or Pixel Tablet yet. iOS has a similar feature, so it would be good if Android users could get this accessibility tool too.
