Apple Fixes Bug In Wireless Keyboard With New Update

A new firmware update has been released for Apple’s Magic Keyboard accessory. It addresses a Bluetooth security vulnerability and is now available for a few wireless Magic Keyboard models.

This update fixes a problem where someone could steal your keyboard’s pairing info if they had it in their hands. They would then be able to listen in on what you type over Bluetooth. Apple learned about this issue in December.

The update is version 2.0.6. It works on these Magic Keyboards:

  • Normal Magic Keyboard
  • 2021 Magic Keyboard
  • Magic Keyboard with a number pad
  • Magic Keyboard with a fingerprint sensor
  • Magic Keyboard with fingerprint sensor and number pad

The update installs automatically in the background when your keyboard is connected to a Mac, iPad, iPhone, or Apple TV. You can check which version you have by opening Bluetooth settings on your Mac near the keyboard.

This bug let people steal your pairing code if they picked up your wireless keyboard. Now the update makes the keyboard more secure with improved checking. Apple thanks the security researcher Marc Newlin who found the problem.

Make sure to keep your Magic Keyboard updated to stay protected from this Bluetooth security bug. The fix arrived on January 9th, so update soon if you haven’t already. Stay safe with updated Apple devices!
