Though it doesn’t even have a set release date, a select YouTubers, notably Dave Lee of the Dave2D channel, have managed to get their hands on the next PlayStation 5. If you’ve been wondering how the detachable disc drive functions, Lee’s breakdown of the console, which he posted yesterday, is the best view you’ll get without having to shell out $499 for the PS5 later this month.
In his video, Dave Lee takes the new PlayStation 5 apart to show us how the removable disc drive works. After removing the side panel, you can see the disc drive held in place by just three screws. Lee shows that unscrewing these is all it takes to pull the drive out – it’s that easy! The disc drive sits in a special slot that keeps it secure, but allows it to slide in and out with no hassle.
With the disc drive taken away, you can get a clear look at the inside of the PS5. Lee also shows that without the drive, the new PS5 is significantly lighter than the original model. He believes this makes it nicer to move around, like if you want to bring your console to a friend’s house. Lee reassembles the PS5 too so we can see what it looks like all put back together.
