Netflix Ends Its DVD Rentals Service

Netflix Planning Interactive Shops Called "Netflix House"

If you were a big movie fan between the late 1990s and 2000s, then you probably used Netflix’s DVD service. This service officially ended yesterday. According to a blog post, Netflix shipped its last DVD this morning. As Netflix shuts down its DVD business, it will now exclusively offer streaming services.

Back in April, Netflix announced it would end its DVD rentals this fall. Now the company has announced that the final DVD was shipped out today. Netflix’s CEO said the DVD part of the business was making less and less money each year. In 2022, DVD rentals only made up half a per cent of Netflix’s total earnings.

Netflix started as a DVD rental service over 25 years ago. The blog looks back at how Netflix grew from shipping out DVDs to becoming a popular streaming site. There is also a timeline graphic showing Netflix milestones from 1997 to today.

To say goodbye, Netflix shared a farewell video. The video shows people receiving and returning red DVD envelopes through the years. It ends with a woman dropping the very last envelope in a mailbox.

With the shutdown of DVD rentals, Netflix will only offer movies and TV shows to watch online. While streaming has become more popular, some will miss selecting discs to watch at home. After many years of rental service, this marks the end of an era for Netflix DVD rentals.
