Microsoft Bringing Ads to the Windows 11 Start Menu

Ads are coming to yet another place where they shouldn’t. With Windows 11, Microsoft is integrating ads directly into the Start menu. The computer company recently released an update for Windows 11 that adds a “Recommended” section to the Start menu. This section will show ads for apps from the Microsoft Store.

Even though Microsoft says the ads will help users find new apps, many people will not like seeing ads on their Start menu. The good news is there is a way to turn the ads off. In the Windows settings, you can disable the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more” option. This will remove the recommended section and ads from the Start menu.

The Windows 11 update also improves some other parts of the operating system. Animated icons on the Start menu will now be clearer. Widgets, or small apps, on the taskbar, will have better-quality images too. And widgets on the lock screen should work more reliably.

In summary, Microsoft’s new Windows 11 update includes ads for apps in the Start menu. But you can choose to remove these recommendations and get an ad-free Start menu again in your Windows settings. Most people probably don’t want ads mixed in with the apps and files they open regularly. It will be interesting to see the reaction to Microsoft bringing ads to another major part of Windows.
