Gemini App Now Works on Devices Back to Android 10

Google’s Gemini assistant (as Bard or otherwise) has been available for just over a year, using generative AI capabilities. It appears that older phones can now download the Android app, which has previously been restricted to more recent devices. The Gemini app used to require Android 12 or newer, but it was discovered that Android 10 devices or later can now run it.

This is great news for people with older phones from 2017 or 2018, as the app will now work on their devices too. The new minimum version is Android 10 instead of Android 12. This was noticed when checking the latest version of the Gemini app on APKMirror. The Google Play Store listing was also updated to confirm Android 10 is now the minimum requirement.

While Google’s support page still says Android 12 is needed, this will likely be changed soon. Having the Gemini app available on more Android versions means more people can access the helpful AI features, even if they don’t have the newest phone. It provides another reason for owners of older phones to continue using them.

The Gemini app allows interactive conversations through text with its generative AI. Now millions more Android users will be able to enjoy chatting with the digital assistant, no matter what version their phone is running. This expanded compatibility is welcome news for the many still using several year old smartphones.
