iPhone 15 Pro Max Glass Cracks Easily in Durability Test

According to Apple, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max showcase a completely redesigned chassis crafted from grade 5 titanium. However, the early concerns regarding the durability of this new design, specifically concerning the curved edges, were raised following a drop test video that surfaced recently. Now, popular YouTube durability tester JerryRigEverything has published his own examination of the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s durability, finding worrying signs of weakness.

In the video, JerryRigEverything puts the iPhone 15 Pro Max through his standard durability assessment procedures. These include scratch tests on the display, cameras, and titanium back. As expected, the titanium back holds up well to surface scratches while maintaining its attractive matte finish.

However, in a shocking result, simple pressure applied to the rear glass with a fingernail caused it to shatter within seconds. JerryRigEverything was clearly surprised, noting that iPhones rarely break during these evaluations. He speculates the extremely tough titanium body may concentrate stress on the glass instead of flexing to absorb impacts like aluminum.

Thankfully, internal components escaped damage. But the fragile rear glass will certainly give owners pause, especially those leveraging the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s impressive camera capabilities. On the plus side, Apple aims to make back glass replacements more affordable this year.

While further testing is needed, this initial incident highlights the potential durability concerns of Apple’s ambitious titanium redesign. Could thin glass prove a weak point for the otherwise resilient iPhone 15 Pro Max? Only time and additional evaluations will provide fuller answers.
