How Google and Qualcomm Are Making Android Phones Smarter with AI

Android phones will now have access to powerful generative AI experiences thanks to a partnership between Google and Qualcomm. During the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 launch, the two companies announced a partnership to bring more AI to Android devices. A state-of-the-art foundation AI model will be run by Google on Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU. These are likely the same foundation models that power AI features such as on-device recorder summaries, Smart Reply in Gboard, and Video Boost.

Google’s AI models will run on the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. This will allow more Android phones to use AI without needing an internet connection. Some tasks that currently need internet access, like summarizing voice recordings or suggesting text replies, will work directly on the phone thanks to Google’s AI models.

Google is working with Qualcomm to optimize its powerful AI models so they can run well on phones. The same AI models used in the new Pixel 8 Pro will power AI features on Android phones with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. This will let phones do advanced AI tasks much faster without cloud support.

Qualcomm says Google’s AI will be the first generative models people see running on Snapdragon chips. Generative AI can create new text, images, and more. Google worked hard to shrink its massive language models down so they’ll fit and run smoothly on mobile. Phones with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 should have improved AI speed and features from Google apps.

Both Google and Qualcomm want more powerful yet efficient on-device AI processing for Android. With Google’s optimized models running using Qualcomm’s powerful chip, phones of the future may have very intelligent assistants that understand you even without an internet connection. Faster, smarter and more helpful AI is coming soon to Android phones thanks to the collaboration between Google and Qualcomm.
