With the iPhone 15 launch coming up, everyone is talking about the change from Lightning to USB-C. This is great because soon you only need one cable for your iPhone, Android phone, GoPro, laptop, and more.
But Apple will likely spin the story to make USB-C sound like their idea. They may claim it’s better for customers and the environment. What they won’t mention is that they were forced into it by regulators in Europe.
A few years ago, Apple argued against USB-C. They said it would create unnecessary e-waste as people swap out old cables and accessories. Strangely, they didn’t make this argument when switching older iPads and Macs to USB-C.
After years of refusing to follow what other device makers were already doing, the EU had to force Apple’s hand. Apple claimed politicians shouldn’t decide on product designs. But the EU wants standards that benefit everyone.
Now Apple will praise USB-C like it was their plan all along. They may even limit it to only “approved” Apple cables. But customers would still be stuck with Lightning if the EU didn’t step in.
So don’t buy what Apple says about loving USB-C now. The truth is they were dragged to it against their will. Thankfully, it means a simple universal cable is finally coming to iPhones too.
