Will MediaTek’s New Chip Run Too Hot?

Will MediaTek's New Chip Run Too Hot?

Each year, MediaTek launches a new flagship smartphone chipset, and the Dimensity 9300 is expected to be the company’s most advanced yet in Q4 2023. This cutting-edge design, however, might have unintended consequences. According to a known leaker, the Dimensity 9300 may literally run too hot to function at its intended speeds.

The leaker says this issue is because of how ambitious the chip’s design is. It is believed that the Dimensity 9300 will have four powerful processor cores and four medium cores instead of smaller helper cores like other chips. This makes it more similar to computer chips than smartphone chips.

If this hot-running problem is real, MediaTek has some choices. They could slow down the chip’s speed to keep it cooler. Or they could offer phone makers other options instead of just the new 9300. But most brands want the latest and greatest chip, so giving options may not work.

MediaTek will likely work with phone companies to fine-tune performance too if it is heating up more than normal. Brands like Oppo already run their high-end phones slower out of the box for better battery life and cooling. OnePlus throttled common apps to only use weaker cores by default as well on one model.

Getting too hot is still a worry if brands push performance modes or certain battery-draining apps though. We asked MediaTek about the reported overheating but haven’t heard back yet. Hopefully, it’s not true, as their flagship chips have come a long way in recent years and offer competition to Qualcomm, the top Android chip maker. Only time will tell if the Dimensity 9300 lives up to its potential without overheating issues.
