YouTube Music’s Podcast Plan Hits Some Roadblocks

In its latest blog post discussing the future of podcasts on YouTube, YouTube Music wants to be the “ultimate destination for podcasters and fans alike.” The platform highlighted improvements like third-party RSS support, auto downloads and customizable sorting. However, the experience lacks the basic features many users expect.

While recommendations and discovery are strengths, podcast listeners forced to switch from Google Podcasts face frustrations. Functions to mark episodes as played or get notifications are missing. It can also be difficult to find specific shows or create queues.

Reddit comments reflect the reality – users struggle with podcasts randomly restarting or deleted downloads reappearing. Jumping between audio formats isn’t seamless either. For some, the workarounds aren’t worth it and they’ve moved to other dedicated apps.

YouTube Chief Johanna Voolich believes personalized suggestions will draw in listeners. But to truly accomplish its goal, the platform must first prioritize usability over novelties. Getting the fundamentals right has to come before complex new additions can succeed.

YouTube Music undoubtedly aims high for podcast dominance. However, addressing the experience deficiencies plaguing transplanted users will be key to validating that lofty vision. Its current road leaves much to be desired for dedicated podcast fans.
