Sony’s Pint-Sized Powerhouse Camera Made for Drones

Sony has introduced a compact and lightweight box camera that is remarkably tiny and suitable for aerial deployment on drones. This camera incorporates the impressive 61-megapixel full-frame sensor found in Sony’s A7R V camera, ensuring high-resolution imaging capabilities. Weighing less than a pound, the Sony ILX-LR1 is smaller than a deck of cards but packed with photo and video prowess.

The ILX-LR1 outputs sharp 4K videos at up to 60 frames per second from its large image sensor. Thanks to the advanced Bionz XR image processor, it can capture high-quality stills and movies from above. While box-style cameras are nothing new, Sony designed this one specifically for drones. It has no battery, screen, or controls since drones provide power and pilots view footage later. This makes it as small and lightweight as possible, so drones can lift it more easily.

Some features filmmakers expect are missing, though. The camera lacks image stabilization since it needs to be tiny for drones. Also, pilots often turn stabilization off anyway. It’s perfect for professional drone photographers and industries like property surveying that need aerial accuracy. Event 38 and Skyfish drones are compatible for real estate scanning and more.

The downside is a high price of $2,950, but professionals may find the photo prowess worth it. Expected in December, Sony aims to sell through specialty retailers. While not for everyone, the ILX-LR1 shows innovation for high-end drone imaging, where size and quality matter most. Its tiny packaging belies the big sensor inside, proving small cameras can still be mightily impressive.
