OpenAI Wants to Use Newspaper Stories, But Not Pay As Much As Apple

Recently, there have been talks about how chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT use other people’s content to teach AI without paying. Apple has been talking to publishers to teach its new AI using newspaper stories. Now it seems OpenAI wants to do the same thing – but not pay as much as Apple.

OpenAI reached out to media companies hoping to make a deal. They want permission to use newspaper stories to teach their AI without getting in legal trouble for copyright. But the New York Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft, saying they copied and used stories for money and competition without asking.

OpenAI said they respect people who make content. They want to talk to publishers about new ways to make money together. But the New York Times wants them to pay billions for copying without a deal.

The Information says OpenAI offered publishers between $1 million and $5 million to teach their AI using stories. But Apple is offering more money than OpenAI.

Last month, the New York Times reported Apple proposed deals worth at least $50 million to several publishers. They want to borrow newspaper archives to develop a new generative AI. The publishers included Condé Nast (Vogue, New Yorker), NBC News and IAC (People).

It’s not clear if Apple finalized deals yet. But since they offered more money, Apple probably has a better chance than OpenAI at agreeing with publishers.
