As Netflix exits the DVD rental business, it looks like they are getting into the physical retail space in a new way. According to a report by Bloomberg, Netflix is planning on opening retail destinations called “Netflix House” that will offer more than just merchandise. Visitors will be able to buy food and experience interactive activities inspired by popular Netflix shows and movies too.
Although the first Netflix House locations won’t open until 2025 in the United States, details are still emerging. For example, we don’t know yet where these permanent shops will be located. Netflix currently runs an online store selling apparel and accessories from hits like Stranger Things. They have also done pop-up shops in the past. Netflix House would mark their first long-term brick-and-mortar retail presence.
Netflix continues to look for new ways to make money beyond monthly subscriptions as they periodically increase subscription prices. The report says Netflix House will be part store, part restaurant, and part immersive entertainment to fully immerse fans in their favorite Netflix worlds. Visitors can shop for clothes and gear while also eating themed meals in a fun environment related to shows like Squid Game.
By launching Netflix House, the streaming giant aims to take fan experiences to the next level. As Netflix VP Josh Simon stated, they have seen how much audiences love delving deeper into their content universes. Now Netflix hopes these interactive retail destinations will satisfy that demand for deeper immersion in an exciting physical setting.
