Google Camera App Gets New Name on Play Store

Google Camera App Gets New Name on Play Store

Since the Google Camera app has been exclusive to Pixel phones for several years now, it has been renamed on the Google Play Store accordingly. The app is now called “Pixel Camera” instead of “Google Camera”.

Some other changes were made to the app listing on the Play Store too. The description was updated to focus more on the Pixel-exclusive camera features people can use like Portrait mode, Night Sight, video stabilization and Cinematic Blur.

The requirements section now clearly states that the latest version of Pixel Camera only works on Pixel phones running Android 14 or higher. It also says some Pixel Watch features only work if connected to a Pixel phone with Android version 3 or newer.

Google is using the Play Store listing to highlight some exclusive camera features of the new Pixel 8 Pro too. This includes the 50 megapixel high resolution mode and extra “Pro” camera controls. The screenshots showing app features are also from the Pixel 8 Pro.

If the name “Pixel Camera” sounds familiar, Google introduced it at their I/O event earlier this year. It groups together camera apps like Pixel Call Assist and Pixel Speech Recorder that are made just for Pixel devices.

Overall it makes sense for Google to rename the camera app to Pixel Camera since it is truly designed for and only works on their Pixel phones. The update on the Play Store helps better communicate this to anyone looking for the app.
