Instagram Takes Steps to Protect Teens

A number of steps are being taken by Meta to make its platforms more suitable for teenagers. Now that Instagram and Facebook have gathered advice from experts, teens will be automatically placed on the most restrictive content control settings.

In a new policy, Instagram will now place all teenagers under its strictest content filters by default. This includes what teens see on their Feeds, Explore section, Posts and Stories.

Certain sensitive topics like self-harm, suicide or eating disorders will be blocked or redirected to help resources. Instagram will also hide search results for terms related to these issues when searched by teens.

Even content shared between teen friends may be filtered out if it’s inappropriate. The changes aim to shield teenagers from seeing complex topics they’re not emotionally ready for yet.

The new restrictions have begun rolling out and will finish within the coming months. Instagram wants to make sure all current and new teenage users are automatically covered.

By teaming up with experts, Instagram is taking positive steps to build a safer space for young minds. Their new protective measures should give both teens and parents greater peace of mind online.
