Getting Ready for Threads Developer Access

Twitter/X competitor Threads has introduced developer documentation ahead of the API’s June release, which will be available to select companies for testing. Threads wants developers to start building apps that connect to the new social network.

The documentation shows developers how they can get insights from Threads posts, like views, likes and shares. It also explains how to make new posts and share photos/videos. Developers can get replies to posts and see how to fix common problems.

Threads accounts can only make 250 posts or 1,000 replies in a day through the API. This prevents spam and overuse. Photos and videos must meet size limits too. Text posts are limited to 500 characters, more than Twitter but less than X.

It’s not clear yet if Threads will favor some apps over others. So far, companies testing the API include popular social media tools like Sprinklr, Sprout Social, Social News Desk, Hootsuite and the tech news site Techmeme.

Although Threads works with other social networks like Mastodon, developers can’t enable or disable this sharing through the API yet. Users still go to the app settings for that.

Threads will update the documentation based on developer feedback. Developers can also request early access to the API through a sign-up page. This helps Threads prepare for the public API launch in June and track which apps are ready.
