Finally, some love for Google Keep: What the new update means

One of my must have apps, Google Keep, is finally getting an update after looking pretty much the same for years. This upgrade, albeit small, is still handy. Google is enabling the text formatting option giving users the option to bold, italicize and transform text in Google Keep.

For the longest time, Google Keep on Android has lacked basic text formatting tools that notes taking apps are expected to have. You could only write plain text without changing the appearance. That is finally changing with this new update rolling out. Users will see options to make text bold, italic, strikethough and more directly from the note creation screen.

In addition to formatting, Google is also adding version history to Keep. This allows users to see all the changes made to a note over time. You can view earlier versions of the note by clicking the three-dots menu. This is useful to recall what was edited in the past.

Some other features like homescreen widgets and ability to open multiple note windows were also improved earlier this year. Google Keep continues to get better optimized for tablets with large screens.

While the update is minor, it is still good to see Google paying attention to Keep after years of no major changes. Being able to style text makes notes more organized and presentation-ready. The version history also adds needed context when revisiting old notes.

Power users will hope for more robust features like customization, collaborations and automation in the future. But this update keeps Google Keep among the best free note-taking apps, especially for Android customers.
