Could PPSSPP Finally Come to iOS?

The most popular emulator for Android today is PPSSPP, but it isn’t available on Apple’s App Store because the iPhone maker doesn’t allow emulators. It sounds like the PPSSPP developer is ready to take advantage of Apple’s recent change in App Store guidelines to allow emulators.

The creator of PPSSPP confirmed he plans to bring the popular PSP emulator to the Apple App Store later this year. But it depends on Apple’s new rules for emulators.

There is confusion around if Apple will permit emulators to have “file pickers”, which let users select their own game files. Without this, emulators couldn’t work well since most don’t include games.

The developer said PPSSPP will come to iOS if the rules allow file pickers. But it won’t if Apple bans this feature. File pickers are essential for emulators to function properly.

Good news is PPSSPP may not need “just-in-time” compiling on iPhones. This technique boosts performance but Apple may prohibit it. iPhones are powerful enough without it.

iOS fans will have to wait and see if Apple’s new emulator guidelines open the door for PPSSPP. This could finally satisfy emulator lovers on iPhones.
