Apple Adds USB-C to AirPods Pro Charging Case

As many expected, the AirPods Pro is getting USB-C charging too. At their big announcement event, Apple said the popular wireless earbuds will now come with a charging case that uses USB-C instead of Lightning.

This change makes a lot of sense. Apple recently switched the iPhone over to USB-C since that’s the standard used by most other devices now. It would be weird if the AirPods Pro case was still Lightning while the new iPhone 15 uses USB-C.

With USB-C, iPhone 15 owners can conveniently charge their AirPods case using the same cable they use for their phone. Apple also noted that you’ll be able to juice up your AirPods directly from an iPhone using the Lightning to USB-C cable.

The switch to USB-C continues Apple’s move towards using that common port everywhere. Other Apple products like Macs, iPads, the Apple TV remote,, and certain headphones already use USB-C.

Unfortunately, the regular AirPods and higher-end AirPods Max weren’t mentioned as gaining USB-C. Rumors suggest those models may get updated next year with the new charging standard.

For now, Apple is making life easier for iPhone and AirPods Pro users by syncing up those devices with a shared USB-C connection. It’s a smart, simple change to keep two popular products fully charged with one universal cable type.
