Amazon Working on Their Own Smart Home Operating System

For its smart TVs and other smart home devices, Amazon often uses a forked version of the Android operating system. However, Google’s OS may soon be replaced with the company’s own. As early as next year, the transition to Amazon’s new operating system could begin.

Amazon is said to be developing an alternative to Android for its products called “Vega”. Sources have told reporters that Vega has been tested on Amazon Fire TV devices. Amazon has also informed partners about plans to switch to this new OS in the future. Some Fire TVs may start shipping with Vega installed as early as next year, according to sources.

There are a few reasons why Amazon would want its own operating system. Android has extra code that smart home devices don’t need. Fire OS, Amazon’s version of Android, isn’t as new as the regular Android OS. Google has also tried to stop some companies from making TVs with Amazon tech inside.

Vega uses the popular Linux software. App makers are being encouraged to use a tool called “React Native” to build apps. This will let apps work on older Amazon devices with Android as well as new ones with Vega. This ensures users have access to all their favorite apps no matter what system their Amazon device runs.

In time, Amazon may ditch Android completely and only use Vega across all its products, like smart displays and smart home speakers. Like with Fire OS, having its own system will give Amazon more control over serving personalized ads, keeping device costs low for customers. Only time will tell if Amazon succeeds in making the switch to their innovative new Vega operating system!
