The End of GPay App and P2P Payments in the US

In 2022, when Google Wallet launched, the “GPay” app was still available in a few countries. It was announced today that the old Google Pay app will soon be gone from the US.

Google has announced that the GPay app and person-to-person (P2P) payments will stop working in the US starting June 4th, 2024. The GPay app lets you see your payment history like conversations and track your spending. However, it will only remain available for users in India and Singapore where Google needs to support local needs.

After June, you can’t use P2P payments on the GPay app to send, request or receive money from others in the US. You will need to use the Google Pay website to view your balance and transfer money to your bank account if you received money through GPay rewards or cashback.

Google is removing the “Insights” tab on GPay that links your bank accounts or credit cards to see all transactions and balances. The Google Pay website only shows a simple history without these financial insights. GPay also let you easily search transactions, but this capability is going away.

Google wants people in the US to use the Google Wallet app instead of GPay. Google Wallet can store your transit cards, IDs, tickets and other passes right on your phone. Google said Wallet is used 5 times more than GPay in the US.

Even after GPay is gone, you can still use “Google Pay” to pay during online or in-store purchases as usual. Google Pay is the name for making payments, which is now handled through Google Wallet.

Google is sadly removing useful tools from GPay without clear replacements. Be sure to transfer any GPay balance before it shuts down P2P and the app on June 4th, 2024.
