Samsung’s Galaxy AI Features – Free for Now But Fees Later?

It appears that Samsung will eventually charge for its new Galaxy AI features, which are one of the major selling points of the new Galaxy S24 series. Buried in the details, Samsung says the Galaxy AI tools will only be free to use until the end of 2025 on supported devices.

When the Galaxy S24 launched, Samsung highlighted Galaxy AI as a major new capability. Features like image editing, document translation and voice transcription are controlled through artificial intelligence. But it seems this may not remain free to access long term.

In a footnote on Samsung’s website, the company notes Galaxy AI tools will be provided free of charge until the end of 2025. This suggests Samsung could begin charging subscription fees after that date to keep using the AI. It’s unclear how much fees might be, but they would apply to most features run through Samsung’s own cloud system.

Some AI functions operating directly on the device may remain free. However, the more advanced demonstrations involving cloud processing could need a paid plan going forward. Samsung provided a few other specifics about planned payment models.

This news comes as a surprise since Samsung has marketed Galaxy AI as a core selling point of the new phones. Most people polled said they wouldn’t want to pay extra for AI that’s been a standard feature. Only time will tell what Samsung ultimately does with fees.

For now, Galaxy S24 buyers can enjoy the full Galaxy AI experience free of cost. But it’s worth keeping in mind charges may apply down the line. Let’s hope Samsung provides more transparency around their long term monetization plans for Galaxy AI before 2025.
