Apple Acquires AI Startup to Take on Google with Faster Device Smarts

With Apple following Google’s announcement of its Gemini Nano model, the battle for on-device AI supremacy is heating up. An earlier report showed that Apple acquired Canadian artificial intelligence startup DarwinAI. DarwinAI specializes in creating smaller and faster AI systems, which are crucial to on-device processing.

DarwinAI makes AI work better directly on devices without needing the internet. Apple buying the company hints that iPhones and Macs may get smarter using built-in AI soon.

DarwinAI employees now work at Apple to make Siri, messaging and other apps understand you faster right on your device. This keeps data on your device for more privacy too.

On-device AI is better because it works without internet. It’s also cheaper since gadgets don’t need to send everything to big computer servers. Apple said last month we’ll hear about new AI plans later in 2022.

Experts believe Apple will show improved Siri, automated messaging and music suggestions at its software conference in June. All powered by onboard AI muscle from teams like DarwinAI.

Faster thinking directly on our devices is the future. By partnering with DarwinAI, Apple aims to one-up Google’s Gemini and give us even smarter iPhones, iPads and Macs.
