Google Messages will soon have a new interface for taking photos and videos. Google is releasing an update to the app that will give it its own built-in camera.
New Camera Interface Coming to Messages
The messaging app is gaining the ability to take pictures and record videos directly from within the app. Previously it used the phone’s default camera app.
Early tests of the updated version show the new viewfinder lacks some controls found in the main camera. For example, you cannot adjust exposure or white balance levels. However, zoom presets, flash toggle and front/rear camera switching remain.
Quick Switching Between Photos and Videos
One nice added feature is the ability to quickly flip between photo and video modes without closing out of the camera. Before users had to select the mode each time.
Missing Options Could Improve Later
While simple to use, the new camera interface has fewer tools than the main camera app. Google may add extras in the future like more settings.
Overall the update gives Messages a native camera, prioritizing convenience over advanced photo options for now. The streamlined interface should help people easily snap and record directly within chats.
