Will Spotify finally offer lossless music?

We’ve heard rumors before that Spotify was going to let us listen to music without losing any quality. But it never happened. Now it seems like it might actually become real soon!

Some computer code found in newer versions of the Spotify app for Android phones gives us clues about their plans. It looks like Spotify is preparing a new paid upgrade called “Music Pro.” If you pay extra for Music Pro on top of your Spotify Premium, you’ll get lossless audio.

That means the songs won’t be changed or “compressed” and you’ll hear all the details like you do on CDs. Spotify says the lossless files will be FLAC format at up to 24-bit/44.1kHz quality. FLAC is a common way to store lossless music files on computers.

But Music Pro adds more than just lossless streaming. It will also let you remix songs right in the app. You can chop up the music and control the effects to create your own versions. The code found hints that Music Pro will make playlists easier to find by mood, genre, and other filters.

Spotify is still working on improving its artificial intelligence (AI) playlists too. But we don’t know yet if those enhanced playlists will be part of Music Pro.

Spotify hasn’t given an exact launch date or pricing for Music Pro with lossless streaming. But Reddit user Hypixely shared screenshots from Spotify’s code about it. One message literally says, “Lossless has arrived.” Hypixely also spotted signs that Spotify is testing ways to automatically tune your headphones for better sound quality.

It really seems like Spotify might finally let us listen without losing any of the quality of the music. We’ll have to wait and see when Music Pro with lossless streaming comes out. Let’s keep our fingers crossed it happens soon!
