In recent years, Chromebooks have become a significant influence in education. As a result of their low cost, and the fact that they run the cloud-centric Chrome OS, they have become quite popular in schools. For less money than you would spend on a Windows laptop or a MacBook, you can get some great Chromebook options. In response to this market reality, Apple may release a new MacBook line to compete with Chromebooks, according to a new report.
The report states that Apple is working on a new lower-priced MacBook series aimed at students and schools. This new laptop would launch as its own product line, separate from the MacBook Air and Pro.
Apple hopes to target the education sector, where Chromebooks dominate partly due to their affordable price tags. To hit a lower price point, the new MacBook may use different materials in its metal casing and cut costs in other components too.
If development goes smoothly, the more affordable “MacBook Light” could be out in late 2024. But Apple will need to price it significantly below the cheapest MacBook Air to truly rival popular Chromebooks in education.
Only time will tell if Apple can crack into the low-cost education laptop market with this new lineup. Its success may depend on how well it balances price, features and the ecosystem’s benefits against strong competitors in Chromebooks.
