Will VLC Get Free Streaming Channels?

VLC is one of the world’s most popular and versatile media players, capable of playing a wide range of multimedia files and even streaming content over a network. However, it sounds like the program might receive another notable feature in the future.

The president of VideoLAN, the group that created VLC, said the team has talked about adding free streaming channels to the app. These channels would be supported by ads, just like many streaming services offer.

Jean-Baptiste Kempf, the president, explained they want to give users what they expect today – the ability to easily stream content. Especially younger people are used to turning on apps and watching shows or videos without needing local files.

While the plans aren’t final, Kempf said any streaming channels would be optional. VLC still aims to work well for local playback too. Users wouldn’t be forced to watch ads if they don’t want to.

Free, ad-supported channels could help VLC compete more with other media players. It’s already very full-featured for opening local files. Adding the option for streaming live or on-demand shows may attract new users.

However, Kempf cautioned that this is still an idea they are discussing. No final decisions have been made. As always, VideoLAN wants to carefully consider new features to maintain what people love about VLC.

Only time will tell if VLC tries out integrated streaming channels. But it’s clear VideoLAN keeps improving their famous media app to meet modern user needs, while keeping the focus on local media too.
