Meet Gemini, Google’s New AI Helper App

The name of Google Bard has been changed to Gemini, and a new app has been released along with it. With the Gemini app, you can now access the newly christened Gemini (formerly Bard) on your Android device. Gemini is Google’s new conversational AI, and it aims to replace Google Assistant.

The Gemini app allows you to use Gemini instead of Assistant on your phone. Once installed, you have the option to make Gemini your main assistant. This means that the “Hey Google” wake phrase will trigger Gemini instead of Assistant. You can also choose to keep using Assistant if you want.

For now, Gemini can’t do everything Assistant can. But you can use it to set timers, make phone calls, and control smart home devices. Google says it will add more of Assistant’s abilities to Gemini over time. It seems Google may replace Assistant completely with Gemini in the future.

If you switch to Gemini, you can interact with it like you do Assistant. You can press and hold your power button, swipe from the corner of your screen, or say “Hey Google” to activate it. Instead of Assistant popping up, you’ll see Gemini.

Gemini aims to understand what’s on your phone screen to provide helpful information. For example, it can caption a photo or answer questions about something you’re reading. Gemini does most of its work using Google’s cloud instead of your device.

iPhone users cannot download the Gemini app yet. But in the coming weeks, the Google app for iOS will offer Gemini. You’ll be able to toggle Gemini on to chat, make images, get writing help, and more.

Gemini is available now in the US in English, with more languages and regions coming soon. Give it a try on your Android device by downloading the new Gemini app from the Google Play Store!
