Google’s New eSIM Transfer Tool Makes Device Swapping Easier

In February of 2023, Google announced that an eSIM transfer tool will be added to Android devices. This new feature will allow people using eSIMs to securely transfer their mobile plan to another phone without having to contact their carrier. Recently, someone named AssembleDebug shared screenshots on X (formerly Twitter) showing how the transfer process will work.

Based on the pictures, all a user needs to do is start the transfer on their current phone. Their new phone will display a QR code that they then scan with their old device. Once the QR code is scanned, the user finishes up the transfer by completing some steps on their new phone. The whole process looks really simple – just scan a code instead of messing with settings on both devices and calling the mobile operator.

This eSIM transfer tool will definitely streamline things compared to how it is done now. Currently, users manually unregister from their phone and then reactivate on the new phone. Carriers often require contacting them as part of switching devices. With Google’s new method, the transfer happens automatically through scanning a quick code.

The screenshots suggest this feature might be ready with the release of Android 14 expected later in 2023. Deutsche Telekom will reportedly be the first network to support device swapping this easy way using eSIM transfer. Hopefully it expands to other carriers soon so more people can benefit from the simpler process. Google’s tool should make switching phones a breeze for eSIM users.
