How to Improve Your Internet Speed at Home

In today’s connected world, a slow internet connection can be frustrating. Whether you’re streaming videos, working from home, or playing online games, a faster internet speed will definitely enhance your overall experience. In this blog post, we’ll explore practical steps to boost your home internet speed and ensure smoother browsing and downloads.

Know Your Internet Speed
Before making any changes, find out your internet plan’s advertised speed. Log in to your account using your provider’s mobile app or web interface to get the number in megabits per second (Mbps). Use a speed test to compare the actual speed against the listed speed.

Restart Your Equipment
If you are using a modem/gateway, unplug the power connector, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
For a router or mesh system, repeat the process for your router or mesh system.
If you are using a mobile/smart device, you should also power down, wait 30 seconds and power on.

Reposition Your Wi-Fi Router
Place your router in a central location to avoid signal loss. Avoid corners or areas with obstacles.

Switch Wi-Fi Bands
If your router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, use the 5 GHz band for faster data transfer. In my case, I get 50x the speed that I get on my 2.4 GHz on my 5 GHz.

Change Wi-Fi Channels
Use a Wi-Fi analyzer or command prompt to choose an open channel for your Wi-Fi network.

Adjust Antennas
Ensure your router’s antennas are positioned correctly for optimal coverage. If your router doesn’t have antennas, ensure it’s in an open space without obstructions.

Prune Connections
Disconnect devices not in use to free up bandwidth.

Relocate Your Router
If possible, move your router away from walls and interference sources.

Extend Your Wi-Fi
Consider using Wi-Fi extenders or mesh systems to improve coverage.

Upgrade Your Plan
Contact your provider to explore faster internet plans.
