Amazon has been working on a more capable version of Alexa for some time now, but a new leak has revealed that it is also developing a full-blown competitor to ChatGPT. The project is internally called Metis and uses Olympus’ large language model.
Olympus is supposed to have twice as many parameters as GPT-3, making it very powerful. Amazon’s CEO is personally overseeing Metis’ development. Testing is happening now with a release set for fall.
While other big techs have chatbots, Amazon has been slow. Reports say different teams at Amazon struggled to teach Alexa new skills. Even their Olympus model was called “a joke” by some.
Metis is meant to act on its own, like fetching live stock prices. But Amazon has had trouble with similar tasks for Alexa before. Only time will tell if Metis delivers.
Running a giant AI model is expensive. So Metis may require a monthly fee, like the rumored new paid Alexa upgrade. Will Amazon’s chatbot be worth paying for over the free ChatGPT? Stay tuned for Metis’ debut!
