Introducing huddles, a Google Meet-powered feature that lets you start a quick call with your coworkers. Huddles was supposed to be added to Google Chat over a year ago, but we haven’t heard anything about them. The feature is currently rolling out and should reach all workspace users by the 6th of January.
Starting a huddle is straightforward. Just click the dropdown menu at the top of your chat and select “Start a huddle.” This opens an audio call invite that you can easily turn into a video chat, similar to Google Meet. You can even share your screen while staying active in Chat, making it perfect for quick collaboration sessions.
If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is. The feature shares its name and functionality with Slack’s Huddles feature. It’s interesting to see how workplace communication tools are becoming more similar.
While some might say huddles are arriving a bit late compared to other features, it’s a welcome addition that makes Google Chat more competitive with other workplace communication platforms.
