Bluesky Promises No AI Training on Your Posts, Unlike X’s New Policy

According to Bluesky, a social network that’s seeing a surge in users this week as users abandon X, it has “no intention” of using its user content to train generative AI tools. It was announced on the same day X (formerly Twitter) announced it was allowing AI to be trained using public posts.

Bluesky made it clear that they understand the concerns of artists and creators who use their platform. While they do use AI for basic functions like content moderation and their “Discover” feed, they emphasized that none of these systems are trained using user content.

This stands in stark contrast to X’s new approach. Under X’s updated terms of service, the platform now has permission to use public posts to train its AI models, whether for generating content or other purposes.

The timing of this announcement is significant, as Bluesky is experiencing remarkable growth. In just 24 hours, they welcomed over 1 million new users, bringing their total user base to 17.14 million. This surge comes as users leave X, particularly following the U.S. presidential election and X’s increasingly right-wing direction under Elon Musk’s ownership.

However, it’s worth noting that in the competition for X’s former users, Meta’s Threads still leads the pack with 275 million monthly active users and has attracted 15 million new sign-ups this month alone.
